STRANGE OBJECTS OF DESIRE
One day in the footsteps of Lambert leaves an impression. After Kaprisky and Binoche, this year is his year. But the huge difference with those that have preceded him is that he has already conquered the public. Ferrari still lives on his past credit. The old misogynist that he is, the old lover also, he has probably already settled accounts on that subject. And here he settles for a key ring. A key ring shaped like a woman's face who starts out by being pure love, and of course it turns out that his key ring can also behave like a slut. All is clear. There is therefore no happiness in love. I don't know if any particular conclusions can be drawn from this. What hope is there is even key rings are incapable of love? Does this mean that nothing is possible between men and women? If this is the case, what alternative solutions can we look for? Oshima's film, 'Max My Love' which was screening the same night, offers another solution more carnal than Ferrari's: the chimpanzee. And one contemplates, slightly incredulously, the erotic adventures of Charlotte Rampling and a large, hairy monkey with bald buttocks. Well, I exaggerate a little when I say "contemplate". But apparently they do it. Still, what is most surprising in this affair is not so much the subject of the film which has the sole benefit of being original whilst evoking, in a melancholy way, Brunel's classics. What is surprising is that it is a film by Oshima. Of course, he specialises in the study of love, but 'Max My Love' is not like him. So we must perhaps look to the writer Jean-Claude Carriere who came up with the original idea. Nevertheless, Oshima does not shock today any more than Ferrari, yet how they did shock, those two. On the other hand, Rampling's magnetic charm hasn't changed.
Thanks to her and her partnership with Anthony Higgins (who is also a fascinating character), one cannot
remain indifferent to what is shown on the screen. Despite the presence of Rampling, who was starkly sublime in a black dress, Anthony Higgins and Oshima himself, there wasn't a great crowd at the Palais at the end of this long evening. Well, the day hasn't dawned that people will say "Oshima my love". But should Lambert whistle, many would reply "I love you".
